Whenever you throw away a water bottle or a plastic cup in the trash you may kill many creatures. Because landfills are crowded with trash, plastic is dumped onto the ocean where a fish can get stuck in and die of the tight space. Its not just tiny fish that get hurt, but sharks and jellyfish are also affected from the plastic. When a fragile jellyfish bumps into a plastic jug it will die. It sounds pathetic when you say that, but jelly fish are one of the most fragile organisms in the whole world. For example, the Irukandiji jellyfish has been declared the most fragile jellyfish in the world. In an aquarium, if it bumps into the glass it dies instantly.
Plastic takes a few hundred years to decompose so we came up with a simpler solution, burning it. When you burn plastic it releases toxic air and can shorten human life spans. In Africa some people are so poor they are hired to burn plastic. Can you imagine little kids in Africa taking tons of plastic to a burning area and inhaling all that toxic air? Kids do this so that they can go home with money to feed their family. I think it's cruel for kids to stand here idly in America watching television while kids in Africa are at risk with the toxic air.
This problem can be fixed however. We can recycle and do everything we can to ensure that plastic is used as many times as it can. Recycling has been around for a while and people dump their plastic in a recycling can, the only problem is that not everyone throws their water bottles into a recycling trash can. In my school we have something called recycling club which encourages everyone to recycle. We make decorative boxes to give to classrooms so that students can put their finished water bottles inside there. Then on every Thursday we go around collecting the boxes and taking the plastic bottles and aluminum cans to the recycling center which helps the environment and brings along many benefits. This is one effective way to stop plastic pollution.
Another way to reduce the amount of water bottles is using metal canteens. Instead of bringing plastic water bottles to school everyday, you could just bring a canteen with cool ice water to school. Without the hassle of throwing it away, you could just bring it home and refill it to use the next day.
I know some of you will go home, open 6 Gatorade bottles, and throw them in the trash can, but others of you will think about how that will effect the environment. Some of you will get new canteens and some of you will recycle. So next time you finish a water bottle think twice before you throw it away.
