Long ago, in the late 1960s, people tried to exterminate cougars completely. The efforts to kill them made the population drop extremely. The men in that time hoisted their guns, shooting down the cougars one by one. But, after this period, the cougars are still here, but with a smaller population. People shot down cougars because they were huge predators out in the wild. Cougars were lean muscled mammals that seemed threatening even from far away. In truth, cougars have attacked livestock and threatened humans, but they still have their uses in our environment. These mammals are known as the biggest mammal to survive an extermination process. Cougars are in fact the least aggressive mammal around. Because of their fear of humans, cougars do not dare to attack humans as prey. But people are still afraid of cougars, only 20 people have died in the past 120 years by cougar attacks, yet we still hunt down cougars and try to exterminate them.
Nowadays, some of the government’s money was given to protect cougars, but it was limited. In California, cougars are classified as “specially protected species”. But, in Texas, the cougars are known as “varmint”, and anyone can hunt them down at any time. In other states, cougars are hunted as a game. But because these mammals sometimes threaten lives of people, and our livestock, cougars can still be legally hunted. But now, chances of even seeing cougars are rare, much less them attacking humans. Cougars only act in self-defense, and isn’t much of a danger to humans and our society. If fact, more cougars are killed than the humans attacked by cougars.
But even with this protection, thousands of cougars die in the wild, and their population is smaller than it used to be. Even worse, their kittens can’t survive in the wild without a mother. We should stop killing cougars because then we would not have cougars to admire. In order to keep our livestock safe, we should make sure they stay near the house, and do not wander off at night. Cougars attack when it thinks its life is in danger, so in order to stop them from threatening humans, we should keep away from them when we spot them, and only kill them if necessary. Cougars also symbolize leadership to the Indians. They have cougars totems to represent gaining power fairly, and to raise your family and tribe well. Cougars are still animals, and so are we, and we should not hunt cougars and wipe them off the Earth.
Cougars are large predators, but they fear humans more than we fear them. We should not hunt cougars because they symbolize leadership, and they do not attack openly. But people still hunt them, in Canada and in the United States. They are endangered, and so many tiny lives are lost as we hunt them. I believe that we should not hunt them, unless absolutely necessary.
