You are in your car, stuck at a traffic light, windows down, listening to the radio. A car stops next to yours and you are hit by a wall of nausea as the driver’s smoke drifts over. The smell is disgusting and as you peer over, you can see a toddler strapped in the back. The smoke is unhealthy and addicting yet it is still a daily commodity of life.
Smoking is bad for your health, body, and life. It can cause life-threatening conditions like heart diseases and cancer. Smoking is responsible for the deaths of 443,000 Americans each year. Secondhand smoke kills about 55,000 of them. Secondhand smoke is when non-smokers breathe in smoke, causing them to be exposed to nicotine and other toxic chemicals just like smokers. According to the World Health Organization, (WHO), every 6.5 seconds a current or former smoker dies. An estimated 1.3 billion people are smokers worldwide. That’s about 19% of the whole world.
There are so many benefits to non-smoking, and not a single one for smoking. Even if you quit smoking, the risk of getting cancer is much higher than non-smokers who never smoked. Smoking causes so many diseases while a nonsmoker can live the healthy, long life he/she wanted to live. Smoking causes your body temperature, blood pressure and pulse rate to rise because of nicotine. 90% of those diagnosed with lung cancer are current or former smokers. Smoking nearly doubles the chance of stroke, and a nonsmoker’s vision is 15-20 % greater than a smoker’s vision.
Can you imagine not being able to smell or taste something because of smoking? You won’t be very social, when everyone avoids your horrible breath. And when you smoke, the nicotine causes wrinkles and discoloration of teeth and nails, making you look older. As you already know, smoking is addictive, and cigarettes are expensive. You will have to spend thousands a year because of this. When having fun with friends and family, you’ll have to look for suitable places to smoke, a time-consuming, impractical chore. Friends and family may be at risk from secondhand smoke. Smoking is also painful, as the amount of acid produced in the stomach increases and gastrointestinal reflux causes the acid to come back up the esophagus, resulting in a burning sensation.
However, many smokers are not the reckless citizens that many anti-smoking activists claim they are. Most smokers are well aware of the risks and are perfectly fine with smoking. People can sometimes find relief from daily stress from smoking. It has also proven to help prevent obesity because the nicotine works as an appetite suppressant.
There are multiple benefits to smoking and nonsmoking, but the advantages of nonsmoking do outweigh the advantages of smoking. From improved health, vitality, self-esteem, social life, and just simply a better life, the benefits are endless. Smoking is unhealthy in every way, and nonsmoking is the right choice.
